Stages Cycling revamps power meter line, adds carbon option

Published September 16, 2015

LAS VEGAS (BRAIN) — Stages Cycling hs revamped its crankarm-based power meter lineup, showing a second generation, slimmer housing, a new carbon crank option and lowering its retail prices on several models.

"The 2016 model year product line marks another important step in the history of our company," said Pat Warner, Stages Cycling's senior vice president. "Our 2016 product evolutions fall right alongside the launch of our trendsetting Stages Power meter in 2012, our now two-year-long relationship with Team Sky, and — of course — our small part in helping them win the 2015 Tour de France, as illustrations of our continued innovation and leadership within the category of power measurement."

The new second generation meter, which mounts to the inside of the left crankarm, is now available for carbon and aluminum cranks. It's 28 percent lower profile than the first edition and has a 17 percent reduction in frontal area. A new housing design increases the strength of the battery door and housing connection by 200 percent.

Stages' new carbon crank arm is being custom built by Full Speed Ahead and will retail for $629. The hollow carbon design weighs 145 grams and is compatible with 386EVO drive side cranks as well as SRAM Red 22, Force 22 and Rival 22 BB30 road and SRAM Mountain (168mm Q) BB30 drive side cranks. This compatibility is achieved with a range of BB30 bottom bracket spindles. This new carbon Stages Power Meter will also be available for GXP road and mountain cranks in late winter or early spring next year.

Stages is also adding new models from Campagnolo, including Super Record, Record and Chorus, as well as FSA's SL-K Light BB30 model.

Stages has managed to lower its prices through increased manufacturing efficiencies, the company said. A new laser etching system reduces the initial prep of a production lot from 3 1/2 hours to 38 minutes. Two robotic gluing fixtures reduce the steps of securing the power meter housings to the crank arms by a factor of four, the company said.

Stages' lowest priced meter is now $529, for a Shimano 105 or FSA Energy arms; Dura-Ace arms have been reduced to $649 and Ultegra is $579. The Campagnolo Super Record is Stages' most expensive model, at $949.
