Christini launches two-wheel-drive fat bike for Antarctic trip

Published November 7, 2016

PHILADELPHIA (BRAIN) — Christini Bicycles is promoting a new all-wheel-drive fat bike on Kickstarter as the company helps fund a fat bike expedition to Antarctica.

The company first showed its drive system in 1999, but has focused on motorcycle production in recent years, until 2013 when the company built a custom fat bike for Kate  Leeming, who planned an expedition across Antarctica via the South Pole. The first bike for Leeming was built for 4-inch-wide tires.

Now the company has developed a new bike around 5-inch tires that weighs just 32 pounds.

"Our goal with this campaign is not only to get some of the fat bike lovers on one of the coolest bikes around, but to get Kate across the Antarctic continent via the South Pole!  As you can imagine, that takes a pile of snowy money, so anything you can spare to help her will be awesome!"

The Kickstarter campaign has raised nearly $8,500 in pledges toward a $40,000 goal, with 13 days left in the campaign.
