New supplement for endurance athletes contains plant-based betalains

Published July 20, 2017

MOMENCE, Ill. (BRAIN) — Sur PhytoPerformance has launched of its first product, AltRed, a phytonutrient supplement that the company said uses a newly discovered technology to garner the athletic performance and recovery benefits of betalain phytonutrients. The betalains in AltRed comes from the pigment found in beets, which Sur isolates from the plant matrix in a patented process. The company said the betalains are "unleashed" from nitrates and sugars that otherwise bind beet betalains.

"The result is something clean, completely new, completely different, and clinically proven to improve sports performance," the company said.

The company said the supplement improves performance and recovery and suggests that it be taken daily.

The Van Drunen family, the owners of Sur PhytoPerformance LLC and developers of AltRed, have been farming for seven generations. The family has over 1,500 acres of farmland in the Midwest, and grows a variety of vegetables and herbs.

AltRed has received third party certifications from both Informed-Choice Trusted by Sport and NSF, guaranteeing that athletes can take AltRed with confidence that it is free of banned substances and cross contamination.

The product is being sold online at Sur.co and through specialty run, bike and triathlon retailers. A 30 capsule bottle retails for $50.00.
