Retailer Mike Simmons Hit While Riding

SAN DIEGO, CA (BRAIN)—Mike Simmons, owner of Bicycle Warehouse in San Diego, is in intensive care after being hit by a car while riding his bike Saturday. He suffered a broken neck, ribs, leg and wrist.

“I’m very grateful he’s alive and not paralyzed,” his wife Debbe Simmons said in an email. “A young girl about 19 years old ran a red light because she was late to work; she never saw him and hit him at full speed. He totaled her car, they hit that hard. His angels were with him so it wasn’t his time (thank goodness).”

Debbe said Mike still has his sense of humor. “He has a concussion so he said this morning everyday is Groundhog Day,” she said.

“He’s a tough German and he’s fixable and I’m a fixer. It’s going to takes months but we’ll get him back up to speed. He has a great neurosurgeon and ortho surgeon. He’ll have surgery next week on his leg—it’s too swollen—so after that we can take him home, hopefully,” she added.

Simmons is currently at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. While he’s in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) he can’t receive messages or gifts. He is expected to remain in the ICU until the end of the week. —Megan Tompkins
