WASHINGTON, D.C. (BRAIN)—Trek Bicycle recalled 49,000 girl’s bicycles due to an incorrectly welded frame, which could cause the frame to break while the bike is in use.
The recall involves MT220 models sold at Trek dealers nationwide between April 2004 and June 2007 for approximately $300, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which announced the voluntary recall.
Trek has received 13 reports of the frames breaking, causing the rider to lose control. Four injuries related to the problem have been reported.
The recalled bikes, which were manufactured in China and Taiwan, are from 2005 (light metallic blue), 2006 (metallic silver and metallic purple or pink and pearl white) and 2007 (pink and white pearl or metallic purple). Model year 2008 bicycles are not subject to the recall.
The model name is printed on the bicycle frame.
If you own one of the recalled bikes, stop riding it immediately and return it to a Trek dealer for a free replacement MT220 girl’s bicycler or for a $100 discount on a different size Trek.
