Garmin to open some devices to third-party apps

Published September 25, 2014

OLATHE, Kan. (BRAIN) — Garmin watches may soon have access to third-party apps, much like a smartphone or smart watch. Garmin is making open platform software available for third party developers to create apps for its products.

The Connect IQ software kit allows developers to access Garmin technology including low power consumption, extended battery life and connectivity to smartphones and peripheral sensors through Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and ANT+ wireless protocols.

"With Connect IQ, developers can design colorful always-on watch faces, and translate rich sensor data into new relevant metrics utilizing fully customizable data screens," the company said in an announcement Thursday.

"In addition, Garmin devices will now be able to support widgets and apps. Developers can create widgets to add to the main screen loop, like the score of the big game or when the user needs to hydrate during a long run, ride or hike. These apps can be tailored to the individual lifestyle of the user, no matter what they're using the device for."

Connect IQ will be available on some Garmin wearable products next year, the company said. It did not say if it will be available on the company's bike computer products.
