Gift Cards in High Demand for Holidays

Published December 1, 2010

BOULDER, CO (BRAIN)—Gift cards to independent outdoor specialty stores and sporting goods chain stores are in high demand this holiday season, according to a recent survey by Leisure Trends Group of its Most Active Americans Panel (MAAP).

When asked whether they plan to buy or hope to receive gift cards this holiday, 38 percent of respondents plan to buy a gift card to an independent outdoor specialty store and 80 percent hope to receive one. These numbers for sporting goods chain stores are 42 percent and 78 percent respectively.

"Gift cards are a great idea for both the retailer and the shopper looking to buy a gift," said Scott Jaeger, senior retail analyst at Leisure Trends Group. "For retailers, the redemption of the cards brings new shoppers into the store. For shoppers, our study clearly shows consumers want them and they provide an easy solution to the challenge of giving gifts in categories like outwear and footwear where style preferences and fit come into play."
