Detroit Bikes to open flagship store

Published May 1, 2015

DETROIT (BRAIN) – Bike maker Detroit Bikes has announced plans to open its first retail location, named Detroit Bikes 1216 after its address on Griswold Street, Detroit. Located in the heart of the city, the 1,200 square-foot will showcase the bicycles the company manufactures in its 50,000 square-foot factory a few miles away. It will open early next month.

Detroit Bikes 1216 is located on the ground floor of the Albert apartment building in Capitol Park. The space has been restored to reveal stone columns and ornate crown moldings, and antique display cases and oak paneling give the store a vintage feel. Metzger's Bicycle Shop, one of Detroit's historic retailers that was located a few blocks away, served as inspiration for the shop's décor.

"We can't wait for people to see it," said Zak Pashak, Detroit Bikes president and founder. "Detroit Bikes 1216 is beautiful and evokes the city's rich cycling history."

Store manager Bill Sirl said Detroit Bikes 1216 doesn't feel like the average bike shop. "You won't be overwhelmed by hundreds of different models and your choices won't be directed by a salesperson," he said. "You'll be able to take your time and decide what interests you."

Detroit Bikes is the first new retailer to move into Capitol Park, a secluded part of downtown that is currently undergoing a transformation.

"It's great to see people filling up some of the blank spaces," said Josh Greenwood, owner of Urban Bean Coffee in Capitol Park. "People are starting to get out and venture past their cubicles and explore more of the city."

Detroit Bikes 1216 opens it doors on May 8 at 11 a.m., with an all-day kickoff celebration highlighting the brand's growing line of signature bicycles, as well as American-made products and accessories including several made in Detroit.
