ORANGE, Calif. (BRAIN) — A memorial service is being planned for Friday for John Pavlisin, Sr., the owner of Orange Cycle, who died on Veterans Day. He was 89 and died from the complications of pneumonia.

EASTON, Pa. (BRAIN) — Genesis Bicycles will close its store on Black Friday, and the shop's employees have decided to donate their salaries for the day to a local charity.

Store owner Tomias Hinchcliff concedes it's a risky move to close his shop on one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

AUSTIN, Texas (BRAIN) — Austin retailer Division 1 Bicycles has closed after three years in business, and its remaining inventory will be auctioned off Nov. 21 through Austin Auction Gallery.

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. MANHATTAN, Kan. (BRAIN) — Big Poppi Bicycle Company owners Aaron Apel and Jeff Koenig have announced plans to close the store at the end of December. After serving Manhattan and surrounding rural communities for seven years, the partners decided it was time to switch gears.

SEATTLE (BRAIN) — Outdoor co-op REI will not open its stores on "Black Friday," Nov. 27 this year. Instead of promoting retail consumption on the day after Thanksgiving, REI is channeling the attention the move is getting toward promoting increased outdoor activity that day.

WORCESTER, Mass. (BRAIN) — Bicycle Alley owner David Kahn is retiring and has closed his 10,000-square-foot store after 23 years in business. Kahn had sought a buyer but was unable to find one. Sunday was the shop's last day open.

SEATTLE — Hedrick Cycles owner Carson Hedrick has opened a new retail showroom in Seattle, where the road brand is headquartered. Hedrick began making carbon road frames in 2009 as a tribute to his father and launched the brand at Interbike in 2014 with his Version4 frame.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — After operating a mobile repair business for the past year and a half, Jim Steffen, known as The Bikesmith, is joining the ranks of the brick-and-mortar IBD.

BEAVERTON, Ore. (BRAIN) — Kevin Chudy, owner of three Bike N Hike stores in Beaverton, Milwaukie and Hillsboro, plans to retire from the business after 31 years. Chudy is putting the three stores on the block as he transitions into retirement by the end of this year.

FORT WORTH, Texas (BRAIN) — Mellow Johnny's Bike Shop is planning a grand opening Saturday for its new Fort Worth location, which is being operated as the bicycle component of The Trailhead Cycling and Fitness Center.

FOLSOM, Calif. (BRAIN) — Bicycles Plus owner and founder John Crews has announced that after 40-plus years working in the bike industry, he is retiring to focus on his marketing and communications company.

Crews recently sold Bicycles Plus to Mike’s Bikes owners Ken Martin, Mike Gabrys and Matt Adams.
