Marc Sani
Publisher
Marc Sani was in the second month of a four-month kayak trip exploring the nooks and crannies of Baja’s 800-mile coastline when he received a cryptic message from home. Call Bill Tanler. A quick phone call from Bahia de Los Angeles and the deal was struck. We would launch Bicycle Retailer & Industry News in January 1992. Tanler, who passed away from a heart attack 10 years ago, lived to see BRAIN become the dominant trade magazine in the industry. Sani, who now serves as publisher, has helped steer the magazine over the years through several wrenching corporate transitions. Sani is a former wire service and newspaper reporter who thrives on news whether in print or on the web. He became interested in cycling and joined a local cycling club in the mid 1980s, but candidly admits that skiing is his first love and cycling was one way to stay in shape for backcountry powder.

Megan Tompkins
Editor
After graduating from Dartmouth College, Megan found a way to apply an English degree in trade journalism. She wrote for travel trade magazines in New York before moving back to California where she grew up. She joined Bicycle Retailer in 2001 as its associate editor. She left the magazine to work for the surf industry trade association, only to be lured back to the bike industry. She has been the magazine’s editor since November 2004. After recuperating from her third knee surgery, she resolved to quit running and stick with cycling. When not riding her bike, she accompanies her husband Andy on the golf course and tries to wear out her dogs on long walks.

Lynette Carpiet
Managing Editor
Lynette has been with the magazine since February 2005. Before BRAIN, she worked for a business magazine covering the automotive electronics aftermarket, where she met her husband. When not editing she likes to be outdoors or underwater (she’s AOW certified). She once shared a charter dive boat with MacGyver! (And the producer of “Friends.”) Since joining BRAIN, she has rekindled her interest in biking and rides her mountain bike on local paths and trails.

Nicole Formosa
Reporter
Nicole is happy to be living in Southern California after spending four years shivering in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. A native West Coaster, she graduated from the University of Oregon in 2001 and worked in television news for two years before setting out into the great unknown. After stints as a river guide, a snowboard bum and a golf course starter, Nicole became a reporter for a daily newspaper in Colorado. She joined BRAIN in January, 2008. Nicole likes to ride her mountain bike, telemark ski and see the world through “reliable” forms of transportation like chicken buses or the back of pick-up trucks.

John Crenshaw
Contributing Editor
John bought 28 pounds of straight-gauge steel bike for commuting in 1978, at age 33. It got him to work and eventually hauled him over his first century ride, a mountainous monster he wasn’t ready for, but which hooked him on cycling anyway. As president of Santa Fe’s bike club, John founded the Santa Fe Century, grown by others into national recognition, and staged numerous races—even winning a few in the 40-to-death citizens’ categories. John's enjoyed week-long, pass-climbing vacations in the Rockies, but chooses less challenging terrain now. He's supported his bike habit, and family, as an editor, PR guy and part-time game warden with the New Mexico Game and Fish Department, retiring in 1997. John hit Marc Sani up for work with BRAIN that fall and attended his first Interbike. His wife Molly and he have reared two great daughters and are now completely captivated by toddler twin granddaughters.

Patrick O'Grady
Columnist/Cartoonist
Patrick O'Grady has been writing and drawing for money since the 1970s and annoying people in person since 1954, when he was born in a solar-powered, carbon-neutral, organic-log cabin he built himself with funds cleverly diverted from a UNESCO project intended to construct a chain of kimchee stand-slash-pay toilets along the Korean DMZ. He was suckered into helping launch BRAIN when Marc Sani cleverly offered to "buy him a beer" and has been hanging around ever since, waiting for it. O'Grady enjoys solo cyclocross, though he rarely podiums, and maintains a small arsenal of semiautomatic firearms, through which he corresponds with his many vociferous critics. O'Grady and his long-suffering wife, Shannon, have no children, thanks to a number of hastily and unanimously passed local, state and federal measures upon their wedding in 1990, but have been blessed with a pair of massively retarded cats, Ike and Turkish.
