Gas Moves Police to Crank Up Bike Patrols

Published May 28, 2008

PITTSBURGH, PA (BRAIN)—Rising gas prices are forcing cops out of their cars and onto their bikes.

With $4 a gallon gas becoming the norm of late, it seems more police departments are ramping up their bike patrols.

"You think the car's the great savior of us all, but in urban areas and dense areas, you're probably better off on a bike," said Chris Menton, an associate professor in the School of Justice Studies at Roger Williams University in Rhode Island who has studied police bike patrols, to the Associated Press.
