League Prez Reflects on Climate Summit
Share/Bookmark

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (BRAIN)—As the world’s politicians hunkered down indoors to negotiate a climate accord last week, League president Andy Clarke was outside experiencing this Danish city that’s fast becoming known for its bike culture.

Although Clarke, who attended the 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference on behalf of the League of American Bicyclists, never made it into any of the official proceedings, he saw some irony in how little bikes were touched upon in the climate change discussions within a city that has embraced cycling.

“One of the overwhelming observations I had of the whole process—and the reason I wanted to be there—was that transportation issues, let alone bikes, are still almost absent from the discussions and that has profound implications for the bicycle industry,” said Clarke.
