Share/Bookmark

TREVISO, Italy (BRAIN)—Wilier Triestina owner and chairman Lino Gastaldello was killed on Saturday morning while cycling in Treviso, Italy. He was struck by a vehicle and thrown 30 meters, according to an Italian news outlet. He died from his injuries two hours later at the hospital.

Local police are still investigating the cause of the accident.

"The news of the death of Lino Gastaldello, owner of Wilier company, has shocked the team Lampre-Farnese Vini (partner of the brand)," the team said in a statement. "In this sad moment, all the cyclists, managers, staff and our patron, Galbusera, would like to say farewell and thanks to Lino, a good friend of the fucsia-blue squad who lived with the team through fantastic moments. A hug to the Gastaldello family and to Wilier company workers."

Gastaldello had been instrumental in resurrecting the iconic road bike brand ever since he and his brother, Antonio, rescued the brand from bankruptcy in the 1970s. One of Italy's oldest brands, Wilier celebrated its 100th anniversary in business in 2006.

Gastaldello is survived by his four children.
