German Market Stable in 2010

AURICH, Germany (BRAIN)—The majority of German bike dealers expect to see at least a 5 percent growth in sales this year coming off a stable year in 2010.

In 2011, 47.9 percent of retailers in Germany’s bike market expect growth of up to 5 percent, and another 19.2 percent are wager growth of more than 5 percent, according to statistics from German trade organization Verbund Service und Fahrrad.

The average selling price last year for all city and trek bikes was €624 and around €1,057 for all types of bikes. One bike out of 11 sold in Germany last year was a pedelec at an average cost of €2,404, and market volumes tripled between 2007 and 2010 to 200,000 units in that category. Nearly 9 percent of all bikes sold in Germany last year were pedelecs, an increase of 47 percent over 2009.

As of March 2011, the bicycle industry represented 220,665 full-time jobs in Germany including industry, retail, tourism and infrastructure, and €13.4 billion. Bicycles outnumbered passenger cars 73 million to 42.3 million. Sales volume at retail was €5 billion.
