Backroads Acquires Bike Riders Tours

Published October 5, 2009

BERKELEY, CA (BRAIN)—Backroads has acquired Boston, Massachusetts-based Bike Rider Tours—a provider of biking, walking and culinary tours highlighting the unique characteristics of some of the world’s most picturesque regions.

Backroads will utilize its direct marketing capabilities and expanded biking, multisport, hiking, family and insider trip offerings to increase participation by Bike Riders guests.

“This is a natural fit for our companies and Bike Riders guests," said Tom Hale, Backroads president and founder. “Our guests have come to trust Backroads for our ability to provide great active travel experiences. Bike Riders has a similar relationship with its customers and a history of providing access to unique experiences that are otherwise inaccessible.”

“This partnership will provide Bike Riders guests with world-class walking and hiking vacations not only in Europe and North America, but also in Asia and the Pacific and Latin America,” said Bike Riders director Lorenzo De Monaco.

Bike Riders guests will have access to more options (including more destinations and departures), while enjoying the same high quality of service they’ve experienced on Biker Riders trips over the past 18 years. Backroads offers 150 award-winning active trips (including specific family-friendly itineraries) on five continents, with over 900 departures scheduled for 2010.

Backroads was founded in 1979 by Tom Hale, who continues to serve as its president. The company offers biking, hiking, multisport, family and Insider trips worldwide, with the greatest selection of destinations, award-winning itineraries and annual departures in the active travel industry.
