BMX Rider Rickey Bates Dies in Car Crash

PHOENIX, AZ (BRAIN)—BMX rider Rickey Bates died last week in a car crash. He was 23.

Bates, of Casselberry, Florida, who rode with the Sputnic BMX and Shadow Conspiracy teams, was driving the car when it collided head-on with another vehicle late Tuesday, about 65 miles northwest of Phoenix, the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel reported.

Gary Dimartine, 24, a fellow BMX rider who was traveling with Bates, was also killed in the crash, according to UPI.

Bates is best known for being behind the "Banned BMX" videos and products.

There will be a viewing at the Baldwin Fairchild Funeral Home, located at 994 East Altamonte Dr. in Altamonte Springs, Florida, today from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. - 9 p.m.

Services will be held tomorrow at St. Augustine Church, located at 375 North Sunset Drive in Casselberry. The procession will stop by 71 North for a moment of reflection and then proceed to the cemetery.
