Feature enables e-bike comparison by recycling program participation, empowers buyers with more choice on environmental impact

May 2022 — 99 Spokes, a popular bike comparison site and the world’s largest public bike archive, is making it easier for consumers to support brands that participate in the e-bike battery recycling program administered by Call2Recycle and endorsed by PeopleForBikes. Thanks to a new search feature, users can filter results to show participating brands when shopping for their next e-bike.

“When we learned about the Call2Recycle program, we were immediately excited to integrate it into the site,” said 99 Spokes co-founder, Scott Alexander. “We believe most people want to do the right thing when it comes to disposing of an e-bike battery that’s reached the end of its life, but the support needs to be there. The work that Call2Recycle is doing in managing and supporting a national network of local bike shops, each functioning as proper e-bike battery recycling points, is really awesome.”

“We’re delighted e-bike industry leaders like 99 Spokes continue to build upon and strengthen the e-bike battery recycling program,” said Call2Recycle e-bike program manager Rob Latham. “By making information about recyclability more easily accessible to consumers, 99 Spokes’ new search feature will help e-bike shoppers and riders across the United States to better understand their options and how they impact our environment.”

A joint initiative to manage e-bike batteries at their end of life, the e-bike battery recycling program launched in November 2021 and distinguished the bike industry as the first transportation sector to come together under a singular battery recycling program. Call2Recycle teamed up with the bike industry’s trade association, PeopleForBikes, on the program, which was collaboratively designed with a sustainability task force and electric bicycle committee made up of more than 40 bike industry leaders from 20 PeopleForBikes member companies. 99 Spokes will highlight the program through a Call2Recycle badge on relevant bikes in the comparison table and by inviting users to learn more about the program through a link to an article with more information.
