PeopleForBikes Coalition Board of Directors Meets to Discuss Trade and Tariff Developments and Welcome New Members
The PeopleForBikes Coalition Board of Directors, composed of the bicycle industry's top leaders, met in Boulder, Colorado, for their semi-annual gathering from May 12–13.
The board's main topic of discussion was how recent trade, tariff, and regulatory developments are affecting the U.S. bicycle industry. Charles Cooper, founder and managing partner of the Brumidi Group, provided the latest updates from Washington, D.C., and outlined potential future scenarios related to actions from the administration and Congress. Cooper also touched on domestic manufacturing and assembly legislation and how bike industry brands must engage with their members of Congress to share how trade uncertainty is negatively impacting their business.
"The current uncertainty around trade and tariffs is the largest single threat to our industry," said An Le, global marketing director of Giant Bicycles and chair of the board.
"PeopleForBikes' efforts working with the administration and Congress to gain tariff relief are critical to ensuring a sustainable future for bike businesses across the U.S. PeopleForBikes represents the unified voice of our industry and I urge you to get involved and become a Coalition member if you are not already. These challenges are bigger than any one company can tackle alone — we are so much stronger when we work together."
PeopleForBikes General and Policy Counsel Matt Moore updated the board on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's (CPSC) work on lithium-ion battery safety, what the future looks like for the CPSC with the new administration, and PeopleForBikes' efforts to advance lithium-ion battery safety standards and mechanical standards to align the industry and protect consumers.
Dr. Ash Lovell, PeopleForBikes' vice president of government relations, outlined the organization's work engaging its Coalition members in requesting tariff relief including a letter to President Trump on behalf of the bike industry signed by 50+ brands, customizable template letters for companies to contact their members of Congress, and PeopleForBikes' upcoming executive fly-in to Washington, D.C. (June 11–12) for industry leaders to meet directly with federal lawmakers.
After the trade discussion, PeopleForBikes leadership provided updates on industry opportunities and threats based on the work of the Bicycle Product Suppliers Association (BPSA) Trade Association Committee and PeopleForBikes' numerous subcommittees. This committee work is made possible thanks to dozens of industry volunteers who lend their expertise on topics including domestic manufacturing and supply chain logistics, apparel manufacturing, electric mountain bikes, recreation access, and more.
Finally, the board welcomed three new members: Marco Kind, managing director of Cannondale, Juliet Scott-Croxford, president Americas at Brompton Bicycle, and Scott King, chief experience officer and chief business development officer at Runway Group.
"I am honored to join the PeopleForBikes board and support their work helping the U.S. bike industry move forward, " said Kind.
"Given the current industry landscape, I am especially excited to lend insights and best practices from what we have learned in Europe to assist American bike businesses and the industry as a whole."
"I'm looking forward to joining the PeopleForBikes Board of Directors and we offer our unwavering support for PeopleForBikes' work to create more accessible, high-quality places to ride in communities across the country, " said Scott-Croxford. "At Brompton, we believe that riding a bike can change your life — and we know that building safe, connected infrastructure is essential to helping more people experience the many benefits of biking."
"Runway Group has worked closely alongside PeopleForBikes since they first established a presence in Northwest Arkansas," said King.
"I am thrilled to continue our collaboration as we transform Northwest Arkansas into a national hub for bike industry businesses and careers to thrive."
