The Moab Mountain Bike Mash-Up, emceed by Zap Espinoza, brings together four aces who’ve made major contributions to the sport of cycling. From racing and product development to advocacy, brand building, and shaping the places we ride, each has played a unique role in helping mountain biking become what it is today.
Susan DeMattei: Best known for winning bronze in mountain biking’s Olympic debut at the 1996 Atlanta Games, Susan’s career is also defined by her prominent role in the evolution of women’s racing. She studied nursing at Chico State and started out racing on the road before gravitating to mountain bikes. In Atlanta, she lined up at the back of the field before riding through the pack to win bronze.
Greg “HB” Herbold: The UCI Downhill World Champion was one of the biggest personalities throughout the 90s, but his influence goes far beyond race results. “HB” was a pioneering R&D test rider for Shimano, Onza, Troy Lee, SRAM and Rock Shox and was instrumental in developing numerous advancements in both drivetrain and suspension technology.
Ashley Korenblat: Coming out of college, Ashley was a Wall Street bond trader and later the CEO of Merlin Metalworks, America’s first name in titanium frame production. Ashley’s biggest impact on the sport came as an IMBA board member and President. She championed the importance of trail stewardship. Her political savvy brought needed funding that allowed IMBA to expand on an international level. Along with her husband Mark, she now runs Western Spirit Cycling Adventures and Public Land Solutions.
Chris Cocalis: An avid BMX racer at 13, Chris eventually raced professionally and began designing his own frames. In college, his senior thesis was a business plan for a custom bicycle manufacturing company, and one of his professors became an early investor. Chris later founded Pivot Cycles and has spent decades pushing suspension, materials, and frame design forward.
