CARSON, Calif. (BRAIN) — The family and friends of motorcycle and mountain bike legend Mert Lawwill, who died earlier this month at 85, have set a date for a Celebration of Life in his honor.
The event will be Aug. 30 at the Carson Center in Carson, California.
"The event is being designed as a true celebration of Mert’s life and impact, bringing together friends, family, racers, riders, builders, artists, filmmakers, and fans from across the motorcycle, bicycle, racing, and adaptive riding communities," the family said in a statement released Wednesday.
The day will feature guest speakers, moderated discussion, displays of vintage motorcycles and bicycle, the inaugural “Mert Lawwill Vintage Dirt Track Concours,” a special tribute film presentation by filmmaker Dana Brown and displays celebrating Lawwill's motorcycle, bicycle, suspension, and prosthetic work.
Confirmed participants and speakers currently include: Don Emde, Kenny Roberts, Wayne Rainey, Chris Carter, Troy Lee, John Parker, Zap Espinoza, Allan Seymour, Al Kozak, Dana Brown, Shane Cahill, Jake McCullough and Josie Fouts. The event will also recognize Mert’s humanitarian work through “Mert’s Hands,” the prosthetic riding devices he developed to help amputees ride motorcycles and bicycles again.
The family is expecting a significant turnout and all attendees will be required to register in advance through the official RSVP system.
