MILLIGAN, Tenn. (BRAIN) — GoFundMe pages have been established for two Milligan University cycling team members killed by a driver of a car while on a training ride about 11 miles from campus.
Sophomores Haylan Engdahl and Brayden Rogers were killed in Carter County, Tennessee, and seven others injured on Aug. 19. A Facebook post from Ballad Health in Johnson City, Tennessee, on Sunday said three remain hospitalized in stable condition. A third GoFundMe page was also set up to support those injured and their families.
Eleven members of the team were participating in the ride in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Milligan University is a private Christian school located about 60 miles north of Asheville, North Carolina.
John Alexander Benfield, 69, of Newland, North Carolina, was arrested and charged with two counts of reckless vehicular homicide and five counts of aggravated assault by a vehicle with recklessness. He posted a $300,000 bond Aug. 20 and is scheduled to return to court Monday for a preliminary hearing. According to the Kingsport Times News in Kingsport, Tennessee, Benfield has numerous traffic violations in North Carolina and Florida dating to 1990.
