Bikes Belong's Unconventional Advocacy

Published April 2, 2008

BOULDER, CO (BRAIN)—Bikes Belong will be doing something unprecedented this summer as it provides 1,000 bikes each for the Democratic and Republican national conventions.

"Once I got a hold of the idea I knew we could make a strong statement," said Tim Blumenthal, executive director of Bikes Belong. The idea came from Bikes Belong member and Catalyst Communication chief executive officer Leslie Bohm.

Although the logistics have yet to be worked out, Blumenthal envisions the bikes to be used by registered attendees of both conventions to get around the city during their stays.

Bikes Belong is partnering on this project with its member companies and Humana, one of the nation's largest healthcare insurers.

"We're going to put a lot of money and energy into this," Blumenthal said.

The Democratic National Convention takes place August 25-28 in Denver, followed by the Republican National Convention September 1-4 in St. Paul, Minnesota.
