Retailers Unaffected by Carolina Fires

Published April 24, 2009

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (BRAIN)—The fires that have ravaged more than 30 square miles of land have not affected local retailers.

The land that has burned is empty acreage and some housing developments that are almost 10 miles north of downtown Myrtle Beach, according to Myrtle Beach's Beach Bike Shop owner Richard Hussey. More than 70 homes have been destroyed in these fires.

According to Hussey, that land doesn't have any bicycle trails on it, or any retailers that would be in harm's way.

Damage from this fire is estimated to be almost $16 million. Officials said homes and a water treatment plant, which was half-mile from the containment line, were still threatened even though the wildfire remained 80 percent contained Saturday morning. No injuries have been reported.
