Cast members from 'American Flyers' to appear at IB Awards

Published July 27, 2016

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. (BRAIN) — Following last year's "Breaking Away" reunion at the Interbike Awards Gala, this year's Interbike awards ceremony will include an appearance by at least four of the top-billed cast members of the 1985 cycling film "American Flyers."

Members set to appear include the film's main character, David Marshall Grant, Rae Dawn Chong, Alexandra Paul and Luca Bercovici. Additional cast members are still considering participation at the time of this release, including Kevin Costner and Robert Townsend. The IB Awards Gala is Thursday evening, Sept. 22, at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center's South Pacific Ballroom.

"At last year's event, it was evident from many in attendance that some of the classic cycling films of the past have had a profound impact on all of our lives," said Pat Hus, the vice president of Interbike. "We had such a memorable experience with the "Breaking Away" cast last year, that we thought we'd try again with another iconic cycling movie from the '80's – and with the help of Alexandra Paul, everything just came together. Interbike attendees and exhibitors are in for a great night at the IB Awards."

The 1985 movie featured one of Costner's first starring roles. The movie focuses on the lives of two brothers that race bicycles and travel across the U.S. to participate in the annual "Hell of the West" stage race in Colorado, which was based on the Coors Classic.

Interbike will host a free showing of the movie for all Interbike attendees (popcorn included) on Wednesday night at the close of the show in the South Pacific Ballroom.

The IB Awards will honor achievements from the 2016 product year as well as the 2015 and 2016 race season. For Interbike attendees and exhibitors, tickets for the Gala can be purchased during the Interbike registration process. Special advanced ticket pricing for the event is $95 per person, and includes the evening reception, beer and wine, a sit-down dinner along with the awards show entertainment. $10 from every ticket sold will be donated to World Bicycle Relief.

The 2015 IB Awards sold-out in advance of the event - but should tickets still be available on-site, prices will be $125 at the door. Those interested in attending are encouraged to secure their tickets soon. Contact Sean O'Brien, Interbike's marketing director, at 949-226-5799 or sean.obrien@interbike.com for more information.
