PeopleForBikes, IMBA Partner to Support Bike Park and Pump Track Projects

BOULDER, Colo. (January 23, 2020) – PeopleForBikes, the national organization making bicycling better for everyone, has announced its latest round of community grants. PeopleForBikes is partnering with the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) on these grant awards, which focus specifically on bike park and pump track projects.

Seven projects in seven different states will be supported in this round of grants with a total of $51,000 being awarded. Cash grants will be matched by IMBA resources including technical assistance, copies of the IMBA Bike Park Guide and the opportunity to participate in the IMBA Trail Labs workshop.

“Bike parks and pump tracks are a central part of any thriving mountain bike community. We look forward to working with PeopleForBikes and the grantees to bring these projects to life and dream up what trails could come next,” said David Wiens, IMBA Executive Director. “We want mountain bike trails to be as widespread as ball fields. Bike parks and pump tracks help show communities the benefits of bikes and of investing in trails close to home.”

PeopleForBikes Community Grants Program is funded through the Employee Pro Purchase program, which collects donations from individuals who work in the industry and take advantage of pro-pricing on bike equipment. Batch, Cannondale, Giant, Niner, Shimano, Trek and Vaast all currently participate. To date, this grants program has funded more than 430 projects in all 50 states totaling more than $3.4 million in direct funds and leveraging nearly $770 million.

 Farmington Pump Track | $10,000

Farmington, New Mexico

The City of Farmington will use this grant to add a pump track to the existing Sycamore Park. This location was selected based on neighborhood need for a safe place to bike and the programming and resources provided at the adjacent Sycamore Community Center.

John Day Bike Park | $10,000

John Day, Oregon

Following the successful completion of Phase 1 trails, the Eastern Oregon Trail Alliance started planning for the addition of a skills area to provide more places to ride in this small community. PeopleForBikes’ grant will match significant investments of volunteer time to make the bike park a reality.

Bikes Not Bombs Bike Park | $7,500

Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts

This youth-driven project, growing directly out of Bikes Not Bombs’ Bicyclists Organizing for Community Action project, will place a bike park or pump track in one of the three neighborhoods where most of the program’s students live. This facility will be the first of its kind in the area and the organization is working closely with the City of Boston to identify an appropriate site.

 Shonto Pump Track | $7,500

Teec Nos Pos, Arizona

Navajo Youth Empowerment Services (Navajo YES) will use this grant award to rebuild a pump track at the Shonto Prep School on tribal lands. With a professional design and contributions from the school, this facility will greatly benefit the students and community.

La Harpe City Park Pump Track | $6,000

La Harpe, Kansas

Thrive Allen County will use this grant award to build a pump track in the existing city park, providing a place for those both young and old to ride in this small community.

 Minturn Bike Park | $5,000

Minturn, Colorado

Businesses, volunteers, and local organizations are all contributing to this project, led by the Vail Valley Mountain Trails Alliance. When complete, the bike park will include kid-friendly trails, a pump track, and the county’s first adaptive mountain bike trail along with dirt jumps and flow trails for more advanced riders.

Sherando Park Bike Park | $5,000

Winchester, Virginia

Riders on balance bikes, BMX and mountain bikes, including the new local NICA mountain bike team, will all benefit from this new bike-ramp park, accessible by a multi-use trail. Frederick County Parks & Recreation selected the location because it offers space to add features and elements over time.
