Babboe cargo bike recall extended to the UK

Published April 4, 2024

AMERSFOORT, Netherlands (BRAIN) — Babboe has extended its recall of four of its cargo bike models to the United Kingdom over concerns about frame integrity. This recall follows the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority telling the Accell Group brand in February to cease selling its bikes for not investigating a series of reported broken frames as required by law.

Affected models are the City, City-E, Mini and Mini-E, and final recall details are pending. Babboe is preparing to provide a replacement or "another suitable alternative," the brand said, adding "compensation for the inconvenience" also will be given.

Raleigh is the distributor of Babboe in the UK and is supporting Babboe with the recall. Raleigh has asked dealers to stop selling the Raleigh Pro e-cargo bike and the Raleigh Pro e-cargo trike and for consumers and businesses to stop riding them while a comprehensive review is undertaken. These share the Babboe platform.

The Raleigh Stride 2 and Stride 3 e-cargo bikes — along with all other Raleigh, Haibike, and Lapierre models — are unaffected.

Babboe is consulting with authorities about recalling the following models and advises customers to stop using them:

  • Babboe Curve/Curve-E/Curve Mountain
  • Babboe Big/Big-E
  • Babboe Dog/Dog-E
  • Babboe Max-E
  • Babboe Mini Mountain
  • Babboe Pro Trike/Trike-E
  • Babboe Pro Trike XL
  • Babboe Carve-E /Carve Mountain
  • Babboe Slim Mountain
  • Babboe Go-E, Go Mountain
  • Babboe Flow-E, Flow Mountain
  • Babboe City Mountain

These models, in addition to the City, City-E, Mini and Mini-E, were included in the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority's investigation into the series of broken frames.

The agency began its investigation late last year after it became aware of multiple frames breaking. The authority said Babboe received a number of reports of its frames breaking in recent years but did not investigate the cause. The safety authority did not say if any injuries have resulted.

Babboe customers can enter their frame number to see if their bike falls within the recall. They will be contacted as soon as possible about the next steps.
