Taiwan bike makers report sales increases in May

TAIPEI, Taiwan (BRAIN) — Giant Manufacturing, Merida Industries and Ideal Bike, the three largeste publicly traded bike manufacturers in Taiwan, are each reporting their first monthly sales growth figures of the year, a sign of hope for a troubled sector.

Giant’s May revenues were NT$5.36 billion ($169.9 million), up 5.8% from last May. Year-to-date through May, Giant’s sales are down 15.3% from the same period last year.

All three companies filed statements of operating revenue with the Taipei stock exchange last week. The statements do not include profitability numbers. 

Merida reported sales of NT$2.29 billion in May, up 18.3% from the same month last year. Merida’s sales were down 17.3% year-to-date. 

Ideal Bike’s sales in the May were NT$251 million, up 14.6% from the same month last year. Ideal’s year-to-date sales were down 23%.
