Speedplay introduces Light Action cleats, reduces engagement force by 50%

Published July 7, 2014

SAN DIEGO (BRAIN) — Speedplay is now including a new Ultra Light Action cleat with its Light Action pedals. The cleat's redesigned spring reduces engagement effort by 50 percent while retaining the same retention security and release of other Speedplay cleats. It will be available separately as well as with the Light Action pedal and is compatible with previous models of Light Action pedals.

Speedplay's goal with Light Action pedals was to make clipless pedals more appealing to cyclists, particularly first-time users.

"The Light Action's dual-sided design eliminated the looking down and fumbling of single-sided pedals," said Speedplay's designer, Richard Bryne. "But I realized I could do more to make engagement even easier, especially for lighter weight riders, by developing a new cleat spring."

Ultra Light Action pedals retail for $115 with chromoly spindle, $185 with stainless spindle and $330 with titanium spindle.
