Kali's new aero road helmet to ship Dec. 7

Published December 1, 2015

MORGAN HILL, Calif. (BRAIN) — Kali Protectives will soon ship its Tava road helmet, which it first showed at last summer's Press Camp. The Tava is designed as a lightweight and aerodynamic road helmet with innovative protective features. The company said the helmet is more aerodynamic than its competitors while also reducing impact and rotational forces on the brain.

Instead of the MIPS system being adopted by many bike helmet makers, Kali is adopting its own technology, called Bumper Fit 2.0, to reduce rotational forces. The system consists of sections of armor gel placed throughout the inside of the helmet. The oval shapes of the gel compress and deform to absorb and redirect energy. The company said the technology reduces low-G impacts by 12 percent and reduces rotational forces by an average of 25 percent.

The Tava also uses Kali's Composite Fusion Squared technology, a co-molding process whereby a layer of Nano Core foam, shaped with cones facing both inwardly and outwardly, is sandwiched between two layers of low-density EPS foam. The opposing cone configuration manages impact G forces from both directions helmet to ground, and helmet to head. A Nano Core liner also reduces the helmet's weight and volume, which in turn reduces its aerodynamic drag.

The company says its wind tunnel tests show that Tava’s low shell volume, strategic vent placement, and smooth surface makes it faster in head-on and cross winds.

The Tava passes CPSC and EN 1078 standards, comes in two sizes, and weighs 270 grams in the S/M size. It has a BOA closure system and comes with an antimicrobial liner with integrated bug netting. MSRP is $250.
