SRAM adjusts spoking and other details to keep new 29-inch wheels stiff and ’playful’

Published July 17, 2017

CHICAGO (BRAIN) — SRAM has launched a set of performance wheels it says were specifically designed for 29-inch mountain bikes. Compared to SRAM's comparable 650b wheels, the new Roam 60 29 wheels have more spokes, a different spoke lacing pattern and a new hub shell design to produce laterally and torsionally stiff wheels for the larger hoops.

"From XC to DH, these bikes have proven to be incredibly capable, not to mention a ton of fun. Making great 29-inch wheels requires a purpose-built approach, because bigger without a purpose is not necessarily better. Developing a proper wheel for these bikes means understanding that this new wheel needs to capitalize on the quick- rolling properties they bring to the table, while still making them light, efficient, responsive and, above all, playful," the company said.

The wheels are 28-spoke, four-cross, straight pull. The carbon rims have an internal width of 30mm. They are hookless, tubeless ready and have asymetrical drilling. The wheels weigh 1790 grams per pair.

The wheels will be available in August, retailing for $900 (front) and $1,000 (rear).
