Vancouver: the next Copenhagen? • Cobalt Commerce integrates POS with website • Performance marks 30th anniversary with trip to Australia contest

BRUSSELS, Belgium (BRAIN) Monday June 4 2012 10:56 AM MT—Vancouver, BC, which is hosting about 1,000 cycling experts at a city planning conference later this month, may be on track to post European-style levels of bicycle use.

The city has seen a huge surge in bicycle use in the last ten years and now more than 60,000 trips each day are done by bike in the city.

“If Vancouver keeps up this positive momentum towards cycling, I’m almost certain that it could be the Copenhagen or Amsterdam of North America,” said Bernhard Ensink, secretary general of the European Cyclists' Federation.

Some Vancouver neighborhoods see over 10 percent of all trips made by bicycle, putting it on par with many European cities.

“I really think Europeans will be impressed by Vancouver when it hosts the world’s biggest cycling policy conference at the end of the month. Velo-city is going to create a huge push in the number of cyclists,” says Ensink, “but [Vancouver] will have to continue spending on quality infrastructure.”

Velo-city Global will be held June 26-29 and will host traffic planners, cycling advocates, architects, educators, politicians and others from around the world.
