Published June 6, 2014

SAN MATEO, Calif. (BRAIN) — GoPro Inc. has named former Microsoft executive Tony Bates as president. Bates is the former CEO of Skype, which Microsoft acquired in 2011. At Microsoft he was an executive vice president responsible for business development, strategy and evangelism; he left the company in March.

Bates will report to GoPro founder and CEO Nicholas Woodman; Bates will also join GoPro's board of directors.

"I'm fired up to have two seasoned technology veterans like Tony and Peter join our team," Woodman said in a statement. "As president of GoPro, Tony will focus on our core business as well as scaling GoPro's fast-growing media operations."

GoPro is planning to go public soon. The company's sales increased 87 percent last year and profits exceeded $60 million.
