Santa Cruz recalling some Heckler e-MTBs because of overheating battery

Published May 1, 2025

WASHINGTON (BRAIN) — Santa Cruz Bicycles is recalling some Heckler 9 e-mountain bikes because the lithium-ion battery can overheat. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has received three reports of fires — including some property damage — but no injuries.

About 2,850 bikes in the U.S., in addition to 550 sold in Canada, are affected by the recall. Consumers should stop using the e-bikes, disconnect the battery from the bike and charger, and go to the Santa Cruz website to see if their e-bike is affected.

If their battery is recalled, consumers can register for a free replacement on the website. The recalled battery should be disposed of in accordance with local and state regulations following registration.

Recalled e-bikes were sold with a 720Wh battery stored inside the frame. "Santa Cruz" is printed on the downtube and "Heckler" on the top tube and inside the left chainstay. The e-bikes were sold in various colors, including gloss avocado green and maritime gray.
