BROOMFIELD, Colo. (BRAIN) — The homepage of e-commerce sites Colorado Cyclist and Planet Cyclery (which merged in late 2021) each began promoting a "Closing Sale" on their homepages this week.
There are no details about the closing on the site or on the stores' social media accounts and BRAIN was not able to reach anyone at the retail operation on Friday.
Colorado Cyclist was once one of the largest mail-order cycling businesses in the U.S. It was founded by Doug Bruinsma in 1979 in Estes Park, near the edge of Rocky Mountain National Park. It later moved to Colorado Springs before merging with Planet Cyclery in 2021.
Planet Cyclery was founded in 2007 by David Kindrachuk, a former Johnson & Johnson scientist. At the time of the merger it claimed to be the fastest-growing online retailer of cycling parts and accessories. In addition to its e-commerce business, Planet Cyclery operated a store in Broomfield.
In February 2023, private equity firm Sterling Partners announced that Paul McAfee had been appointed president of Velo USA, the parent of Colorado Cyclist and Planet Cyclery. McAfee is a veteran of Nike, Chain Reaction Cycles and Canyon Bicycles.
