Riese & Müller pauses US e-bike imports because of steel tariff

Published August 25, 2025

MÜHLTAL, Germany (BRAIN) — Riese & Müller informed retailers Monday morning that it is unable to ship e-bikes to the U.S. because of the new U.S. import rules placing a 50% tariff on steel used in e-bikes.

"We need to take a few days to carefully evaluate this situation and its implications before proceeding with further steps," Riese & Müller said in the email. The brand's frames are made from aluminum and recycled aluminum.

The steel used in e-bikes, indoor trainers, exercycles and some hand tools is now subject to the Trump administration's Section 232 tariffs. The steel content of these products will be subject to the 50% tariff if imported from most nations, 25% if imported from the United Kingdom. The steel content is not subject to "reciprocal" tariffs, but the full value of the import is subject to other tariffs in place.

The steel tariff applies unless the steel was melted and poured in the U.S. and assembled elsewhere.

The email goes on to ask retailers for their patience and to hold off on "daily orders for just a few days until we share the next steps."
