New location fits Ikon Cycles

SACRAMENTO, CA (BRAIN)—Performance road retailer Ikon Cycles has moved to a bigger location in Sacramento, tripling in size to 1,500 square feet, but don’t expect to find more bikes on display. Instead, owner Adrian Moore has expanded his fit area, installed a bank of Tacx trainers and put in a customer lounge.

“It works better with the fit studio, performance testing—that line of bicycle retail,” he said.

Moore keeps a fleet of demo bikes on hand, mostly high-end and equipped with Campagnolo, and focuses on delivering a high level of service with a select few brands. Road lines include Wilier, Fondriest, Argon 18 and new addition Sarto Cycles from Italy. Moore also deals in city bikes from Linus, Abici and, for price point, Breezer. For mountain, it’s high-end custom builds only.

Bamboo benches suspended from the ceiling help create a more comfortable environment, Moore said, and a hanging PVC pipe sculpture festooned in red, white and green lights speaks to Ikon Cycles’ emphasis on Italian bike brands.

The shop has also capitalized on a complementary business nearby. “There’s a big running shop across the street. Because triathletes go there, it tends to draw them to our store too, without having to directly market to them. It seems like a natural match for our customers,” Moore said.
