MONROVIA, CA (BRAIN) — Just a little over one year after Empire Bikes opened in Chino Hills, California, owner Rock Sanchez had his sights set on a second location. With a 25-year career in the bike industry, Sanchez said he knew he had to get it while the gettin’ was good.  

RIVERSIDE, CA (BRAIN) — In collaboration with Diamondback Bicycles, Jenson USA has awarded 20 BMX Session bicycles to students at Mark Twain Elementary in Riverside County, Calif.

NEW YORK CITY, NY (BRAIN) — Bert Cebular, founder of the NYCeWheels retail shop, died Wednesday in a paraglider accident, according to local news reports.

Cebular founded the shop on Manhattan's Upper East Side in 2001. It specializes in folding and electric bikes and scooters.

HERCULES INLET, ANTARCTICA (BRAIN)—Utah retailer Daniel Burton has left his base camp in Antarctica in an attempt to be the first person to ride a bicycle to the South Pole. If he succeeds, he’ll cover 1,500 miles roundtrip from the coast inland to the pole and back.

PARK CITY, UT (BRAIN) — Backcountry has purchased Bergfreunde.de, an outdoor equipment e-commerce retailer that serves Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Backcountry, which owns CompetitiveCyclist.com, said the purchase marks its entry into the European market.

FAIRFIELD, CT (BRAIN) — Zane’s Cycles president Christopher Zane is offering a $2,000 reward for information that may lead to the arrest of shoplifters who he said are responsible for taking a 2013 Trek Domane 5.9 from his Fairfield, Conn., store. Zane’s Cycles flagship store is in Branford, Conn.

FRESNO, CA (BRAIN) — Steven’s Bicycles has been a Fresno fixture at its Palm and Shields location since 1955, but the retailer will be closing its store there Nov. 22 to move to the Figarden Loop in Northwest Fresno at Brawley.

LOS ANGELES, CA (BRAIN) — Southwest retailer Sport Chalet saw sales fall 5.2 percent in its more recent quarter, although the chain’s online retailing was up 32 percent. The company showed a net loss of $3 million in its second quarter.
