Apple AirTags help Colorado police recover dozens of stolen bikes

Published January 6, 2025

BOULDER, Colo. (VELO) — Police in Colorado say the use of Apple AirTags by some bike owners led to the recovery of stolen bikes and the arrest of suspects.

During a two-year investigation, the Vail Police Department gathered evidence that it said links a suspect to stealing nearly three dozen mountain bikes in Eagle and Summit counties, as well as Boulder and Aspen, between August and September 2022.

The investigation began when a Vail resident reported two bikes stolen and told police the bikes contained AirTags. The AirTag system showed the bikes were apparently on a vehicle heading south out of Colorado on Interstate 25. Police used the information to seize and impound a van in Southern Colorado, then executed a search warrant on it and discovered 17 bicycles, at least eight of which were determined to have been stolen in Colorado, according to court documents.
