POC's digital helmet wins Eurobike award

Published September 9, 2019

FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, Germany (BRAIN) — POC has been awarded the Eurobike Award 2019 for the Tectal Race SPIN NFC, a digital helmet which integrates Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to aid user safety and protection by storing a riders medical profile in the helmet.

The Tectal Race SPIN NFC provides added security thanks to the inclusion of a digital NFC Medical ID Chip. Integrating the Near Field Communication (NFC) chip is unique in a cycling helmet.

POC CEO, Jonas Sjögren, said "The bike industry is quickly evolving and to win an award amongst so many new and innovative products is humbling and inspiring. Our approach has always been to consider all options to improve safety, even if that means doing something that has never been done before. Over the years we have introduced many firsts with our helmets, be it MIPS, Recco or aramid technology, and with the inclusion of an integrated NFC chip we are developing helmets that can protect you before, during and after an accident."

NFC is a wireless data transfer technology which can be uploaded and deleted continuously, requires no battery, or cloud service is virtually weightless and is embedded between the liner and shell to ensure security and readability. It's a world-first for safety and innovation, and as it's now recognized by the International Alpine Rescue Association, it has a flourishing network and community

Combined with RECCO reflector technology (included in the Tectal Race SPIN NFC) it's easier for mountain rescue teams to find missing riders. The separate NFC chip can then be easily read, by rescue teams or other riders, simply by holding an NFC-enabled smartphone over the helmet to instantly give rescuers the information they need at the scene, and support them in making the best judgments for treatment in the vital "Golden Hour" immediately after an accident when the correct treatment is essential.

POC has partnered with the Swedish company, twICEme, to integrate NFC into the Tectal Race SPIN NFC and the Ventral Air SPIN NFC helmets. The Ventral Air SPIN NFC also integrates an NFC chip.

The Tectal Race SPIN NFC and the Ventral Air SPIN NFC will be available in early 2020.
