Steve Frothingham

Steve is in his second stint at BRAIN. He was here at the beginning in 1992 while still working for a bike shop in Santa Fe, N.M. He wrote several articles for BRAIN's first issue and later joined the staff, eventually becoming managing editor and then executive editor.

After leaving BRAIN in 1997 he worked for several news organizations including The Associated Press and VeloNews before rejoining BRAIN as web editor in 2011.

He is based in Longmont, Colorado, and is an enthusiastic (and slow) road, mountain bike and cyclocross rider.

Representatives from Huffy, Specialized, QBP, ASE and Kent ask to speak at hearings on proposed 25 percent tariffs on a wide range of Chinese bike goods.

WASHINGTON (BRAIN) — Industry members have been submitting comments to the U.S. Trade Representative opposing the Trump administration's proposed 25 percent tariff on $200 billion in Chinese products, which includes at least $1 billion in bike-related products.

FARMINGTON, Utah (BRAIN) — Vista Outdoor sales were down 6.6 percent in its most recent quarter and in an earnings call Thursday company executives gave some insights on their plans to sell off its Bell, Giro and Blackburn brands.

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (BRAIN) — Ibis Cycles is now manufacturing size small Ripley LS carbon fiber mountain bike frames at its facility in Santa Cruz. The company said it has developed new carbon manufacturing techniques that reduce labor costs, making U.S. production more viable, and it hopes to bring more production back to the U.S. eventually.

WASHINGTON (BRAIN) — The U.S. Trade Representative has approved the inclusion of e-bikes and e-bike motors on the list of $16 billion worth of Chinese products that will be hit with a 25 percent tariff starting Aug. 23.

HELSINKI (BRAIN) — Amer Sports, owner of Enve and Mavic, reported Thursday that sales in its cycling division were down 13 percent in the first half of 2018, to 60 million euros ($70 million). In the second quarter, sales in the division were down 11 percent.

Tariffs range from 22 to 84 percent depending on factory.

BRUSSELS (BRAIN) — The European Commission has imposed provisional anti-dumping duties on e-bikes from China, with tariffs ranging from 21.8 to 83.6 percent, depending on which factory produced the bikes.
