Phil Doerflein, a bike industry veteran of 20 years, and a former IBD dealer from the Pacific Northwest, has been hired to manage U.S. sales for Tomac.

MOAB, UT (BRAIN)—Zeal Optics says it's not bowing down to what it believes is a frivolous patent infringement lawsuit filed against it by Luxottica-owned Oakley.

BOSTON, MA (BRAIN)—Lance Armstrong, the seven-time Tour de France champion, has entered the 2008 Boston Marathon.

MORGAN HILL, CA (BRAIN)—Bob Margevicius, Specialized’s vice president of bicycle research and development, is moving to New Zealand but will remain with the company full-time.

Mike Sinyard, founder and chief executive officer, said Wednesday that Margevicius was a “top executive who’s done a great job.”

ASHLAND, OR (BRAIN)—United Bicycle Institute (UBI) has hired three bicycle mechanic instructors with Jeff Menown, Nathan Riddle and Matt Eames.

SANTA ANA, CA (BRAIN)—Designed to support the cause of cycling in America by making it affordable for first-time attending dealers, the NBDA’s scholarship program will grant 25 member dealers up to $1000 for all expenses related to participating at this year’s National Bike Summit in Washington, D.C.

NOVATO, CA (BRAIN)–Marin Bikes has added Jonathan Duncan to the Marin Bikes Canada team.

Duncan was hired to assist dealers with sales, warranty and technical service as well as travel for demo and consumer events.

BRUSSELS, Belgium (BRAIN)–The European Union’s trade commissioner Peter Mandelson has retreated from his initiative to radically reduce the European Union’s use of trade defense instruments—including such things as its current anti-dumping duties on Chinese- and Vietnamese-made bicycles.

ANNECY, France (BRAIN)—Mavic will launch a full range of cycling footwear, apparel and accessories next year for the spring/summer season. The line will replace the Adidas cycling line.

TRENTON, NJ (BRAIN)—Hutchinson Tires North America marketing and communications manager Marc Gullickson has left the company.

He had been with the company in that capacity for nearly three years.

CHULA VISTA, CA (BRAIN)—Jeff Deardoff, a longtime fixture in the San Diego area bicycling scene, passed away on Dec. 16 while on a road ride with friends on Palomar Mountain in San Diego County.

"We had the biggest turnout of cycling celebrities of any of the Pro Nights we've ever put on. But for me, the highlight of the night was hearing about Project Rwanda from Tom Ritchey and Jonathan Boyer. It gives the event a significance that goes beyond bikes and racing."

MACON, GA (BRAIN)—Ronnie Thomson didn't live to see 69 this Thursday, but he did live long enough to touch everyone in the bicycle industry including most of all his employees.

Rey has some new sponsorships for 2008 as well including Italian-based Met Helmets and Ergon Bike Ergonomics for grips and backpacks.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (BRAIN)—Dispatch, a San Francisco-based marketing communications agency, broadened its presence in the bicycle industry by announcing its working relationship with Shimano American Corp.
