Gita wins sustainable business award

Published October 30, 2012

CHARLOTTE, NC (BRAIN) — Gita Sporting Goods has been named the 2012 Sustainable Small Business of the Year in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. The award is given annually as part of the county’s Wipe Out Waste initiative.

In addition to Gita's recycling efforts addressing paper and aluminum cans, the company also recycles its carbon fiber waste from crashed or defective bike frames.

So far this year, the company has recycled almost 500 pounds of carbon fiber and it anticipates the program will continue to grow. Gita also reuses boxes and packaging materials and set up shipping profiles with its shippers to ensure its packages come in the box sizes that it most commonly receives, so that they can easily be reused.

Gita's Tim Check and Ruben Talavera were instrumental in developing and enacting the systems and procedures that garnered the company the award.
