INDIANAPOLIS (BRAIN) — Bicycle Garage Indy/BGI Fitness is transitioning ownership from company founder and president Randy Clark to Scott Helvie, the retailer announced. 

Helvie, 37, worked five years at BGI and also worked in manufacturing, sales and distribution for nine years. 

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (BRAIN) — SR Suntour North America is inviting retailers to a suspension and drivetrain clinic at Ray's Indoor Bike Parks in Milwaukee, Wis., and Cleveland, Ohio, in February. 

Pedego Irvine opened in mid-December.

IRVINE, Calif. (BRAIN) — Pedego Electric Bikes recently celebrated the opening of its 30th store in the company’s hometown in Orange County, California. Pedego Irvine is owned and operated by longtime Irvine resident and cyclist Bob Bibee.

ALBANY, Calif. (BRAIN) — San Francisco Bay Area distributor and service center Cycle Monkey has expanded its suspension service business under the new name Suspension Lab, offering retailers quicker processing on overhauls of shocks, forks and dropper seatposts.

TUCSON, Ariz. (BRAIN) — Transit Cycles, slated to open at the end of January, will be the first shop in Tucson to focus solely on transportation cycling. Owner Duncan Benning, a 19-year veteran of the bike industry, has wanted to open a shop since he was in high school.

ROCKY RIVER, OH (BRAIN) — When Scott Cowan learned about Electra’s ownership change Monday, he was both stunned and concerned. The owner of three family-oriented shops in Ohio also sells Raleigh and Giant, but Electra is one of his main brands.

BOULDER, CO (BRAIN) — Total IBD sales grew to $139 million in November, a 1 percent increase compared with a year earlier, according to Leisure Trends Group’s RetailTRAK IBD sales summary. While unit sales declined by 5 percent, average retail selling prices rose 6 percent.

ATLANTA, GA (BRAIN) — Peachtree Bikes will reopen in a new location after its flagship store was destroyed by a fire in early December that also damaged several other businesses occupying a historic building located in Atlanta’s Buckhead district. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire.

COSTA MESA, CA (BRAIN) — Seldom, if ever, has a good word been written about Amazon.com in the National Bicycle Dealers Association’s newsletter — in print or online. Nor has the NBDA’s retail forum had much good to say about the Seattle online retailer.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (BRAIN) — Scott Scudamore, a mountain bike athlete, advocate, event organizer and retail store employee, died Dec. 28 from complications from a mountain bike accident he suffered in September.

BOULDER, CO (BRAIN) — Power meter maker Stages Cycling is offering dealers a new point of purchase display that can be mounted on slatwall or countertops, and features a modular display.

The new store was designed by Jack DeBartolo.

SCOTTSDALE, AZ (BRAIN) — Phoenix area cycling boutique Bicycle Haüs has opened in its new location in Scottsdale. The 6,700-square-foot building is more than twice the size of the shop’s previous location, and was designed by award-winning Arizona architect Jack DeBartolo III.

BOULDER, CO (BRAIN) — As the holiday shopping season comes to a close, retailers are still feeling the effects of the 100-year flood that ravaged Colorado’s front range in mid-September. Heavy rain and catastrophic flooding took a toll on life, property and industry.

GRAFTON, WI (BRAIN) — Erik’s Bike and Board’s 21st store is slated to open on Saturday.

LOS ANGELES, CA (BRAIN) — Sports Chalet has reported a strong start to holiday shopping season showing healthy Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales growth.

SEATTLE, WA (BRAIN) — Multi-sport retailer REI has announced plans to open its second store in the Last Frontier. In spring of 2014, REI will open a 30,000-square-foot store in Fairbanks.

MONROVIA, CA (BRAIN) — Just a little over one year after Empire Bikes opened in Chino Hills, California, owner Rock Sanchez had his sights set on a second location. With a 25-year career in the bike industry, Sanchez said he knew he had to get it while the gettin’ was good.  

RIVERSIDE, CA (BRAIN) — In collaboration with Diamondback Bicycles, Jenson USA has awarded 20 BMX Session bicycles to students at Mark Twain Elementary in Riverside County, Calif.

NEW YORK CITY, NY (BRAIN) — Bert Cebular, founder of the NYCeWheels retail shop, died Wednesday in a paraglider accident, according to local news reports.

Cebular founded the shop on Manhattan's Upper East Side in 2001. It specializes in folding and electric bikes and scooters.

HERCULES INLET, ANTARCTICA (BRAIN)—Utah retailer Daniel Burton has left his base camp in Antarctica in an attempt to be the first person to ride a bicycle to the South Pole. If he succeeds, he’ll cover 1,500 miles roundtrip from the coast inland to the pole and back.
