WASHINGTON D.C. (BRAIN)—Americans drove more than 100 billion fewer miles between November 2007 and October 2008 than the same period a year earlier, said U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary E. Peters, making it the largest continuous decline in American driving in history.

VISTA, CA (BRAIN)—Electra Bicycle Company is expanding its Vista warehouse and office space. Electra’s warehouse space will double in size while office space will grow by 50 percent at the same building it currently occupies.

LITTLE ROCK, AR (BRAIN)—Orbea has opened up its first concept store in Little Rock, the company's hometown.

Unlike other concept stores, the Orbea store only sells new but dated stock, demo and cosmetically blemished bikes. No current Orbea product is sold.

HOUSTON, TX (BRAIN)—Sun & Ski Sports will kick off cyclists’ training for the 25th anniversary MS 150 charity bike ride with its annual “Bike University” Open House Friday, January 23, 5–10 p.m. and Saturday, January 24, noon-6 p.m. at Sun & Ski Sports in Houston, Texas.

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, CA (BRAIN)—The Serfas Bicycle Swap Meet last weekend was a huge success with 25 vendors and more than 1,200 attendees.

I had a chance to see a touching piece on BMX star Stephen Murray's recovery from a horrendous crash he suffered at a Dew Tour event in June 2007. I thought HBO's Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel did a great job showing where Murray is in the recovery process, as he tries to hopefully one day walk again.

HAYWARD, CA (BRAIN)—Panaracer and racer Cedric Gracia have signed a multi-year contract to develop and market a line of Cedric Gracia branded tires to be sold starting in 2010.

TRENTON, NJ (BRAIN)—Hutchinson USA general manager Eric Van Haverbeke is stepping down on December 19.

He's been with the company for seven years.

"I have decided to move and find new challenges within the bicycle industry," he added.

Van Haverbeke didn't respond for further comment.

SCITUATE, MA (BRAIN)—Anyone that's been to numerous tradeshows and racing events probably knows Steve Long and his entrepreneurial spirit.

Long (pictured) passed away on December 4 from brain cancer.
